Home made food for baby?

The American Association of Pediatrics recommends that infants start solid foods at six months.  Many pediatricians still start infants on solid foods at four months.  Sometimes babies are still hungry after formula or breast feeding and need to start on solids earlier than other children.  The question is whether homemade food provides enough nutrients for an infant and how difficult is it to make.

Before getting started making homemade food for your baby you should definitely consult with your pediatrician and then do some research for recipes that are nutritious and tasty.  Many of these recipes can be taken out in a gift tote bag to a restaurant if you are taking baby out while you eat out.

The same flavors and textures do not appeal to all babies.  It takes little time to prepare many of the recipes out there, so allow lots of room to experiment and find the foods your baby will enjoy. Many parents are working parents and don’t have lots of time to experiment.   I suggest trying a couple of recipes a week and alternate with prepared foods.  To be safe, make sure that you always wait for four days between giving new foods to your baby.  The four day waiting period will allow testing for allergies.

Back in the day, when I was preparing table food for our children, we had a little hand grinder that we kept in the gift tote bag for use when we were out for meals and at home.  Our children got basically the same food we were eating if it could be ground up.  I had a very difficult time getting the kids to eat baby food, though it was probably more nutritious.  They just didn’t like the taste and ended up wearing more than they ate.  I can’t say I recommend this method, but all the kids are grown and healthy.

My belief is that homemade food can easily provide enough nutrients for an infant and maybe more and fewer preservatives are included when you prepare homemade food for baby.  You can make good decisions for your baby’s eating by doing a little research and enjoying the process of testing recipes and getting to know your babies likes and dislikes.
